Carl O. Bennett, former Dixie Regional Executive (R.E.) throughout most of the 1990s, passed away Sunday, July 18th, unexpectedly of a heart attack. Though Carl hasn't been active in the club lately, he was the club's leader for many years and at one time was dubbed the Dixie R.E. for Life. When Carl wasn't running his All Day and Night Plumbing business for the past 30+ years, back in the day he was tinkering with his Mazda Rotary pickup truck or his second gen RX-7 race car. Lately he rode his bike daily on the St. Marks Trail. He had a huge presence and an even bigger heart. He was one of the kindest, most decent people you'd ever have the pleasure to know.
Carl was a true southern boy through and through. He always had a memorable way of telling a story or an announcement. When Carl became Safety Steward, he made a tradition of making the same announcement at driver meetings with his unmistakable southern accent, "If the throttle sticks, turn off the key, take away the fire, and it will eventually come to a stop!" It was so memorable to this day someone makes the same announcement as best they can in Carl's voice during event driver meetings. One time Carl shortened a 12 step recovery program by declaring during an awards presentation while shaking his head, "I don't need no 3 step program, I'm addicted -- to racing!"
A Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, July 21, 2010 at 11:00 am from Culley's Riggins Road Chapel, 1737 Riggins Road, Tallahassee, (850) 877-8191. He is survived by his wife Gail and his two grown children Jason and Jennifer.

There are way too many Carl stories. I wrote an article about him for Pylon a few years ago. Loved that guy...
My first ever autocross was an Allies-Axis event, and I can't remember if it was 91 or 92. When I arrived, early, the only person there was Carl, dressed as a Samurai warrior. Helluva introduction to the group, but after about ten minutes with Carl, I felt like part of the gang. He was just that way. I'll miss him.

In past articles, I’ve mentioned my friend JK numerous times. Perhaps too often, half a dozen folks called JK and tried to buy “my” E-Type after I wrote about it. This article is not about him, it’s about another important member of the Dixie Region of SCCA (otherwise known as “The Tallahassee Gang”). This weekend I went to a Solo I with a guy named Carl. This article is about Carl, and dedicated to him.
Carl is a big fellow, just barely fits in his RX-7. He’s one of those guys that you can talk to for five minutes and figure out he’s just a boy, grown up. Carl knows no artifice, no deception. When I met him, Carl was Solo II racing in H Stock in a Mazda Rotary pickup. Yeah, yeah, H Stock is for 4 cylinder engines but it’s a small region and we believe in the old philosophy of “Run what ya brung.” Carl raced his Mazda pickup, working on suspension, changing tires, adding a swaybar, all the usual. We gave his truck the joshing title “The Cow” in honor of its unique exhaust note, but you just had to enjoy watching Carl wrestle that thing around the course.
Carl was (and still is) a tireless worker, going to Solo I events, road races, anything and everything. He got his Safety Steward certification, and took it seriously. No Dixie Region Solo II would be complete without Carl hollering “If the accelerator pedal sticks, turn off the key! Take the fire away!” He worked a corner at night in the cold and wind of Daytona in February, and in the rains of Sebring. Carl got involved in the politics of Dixie Region, bringing his own unique innocence and honesty and rising to Regional Executive.
About a year ago, Carl took his piggy bank bought and himself a second generation RX-7. It was a non-turbo model, kind of a champagne gold color. Carl put adjustable shocks and new springs on it, added sway bars and a roll cage. The crowning touch, after the five point belts, was a Kirkey aluminum racing seat. Carl was going big time, he was going Solo I racing, high speed events at real race tracks. All along, he told us “One day, I’m going to race at Road Atlanta.” That was his dream, to race on his favorite track, up and down the red clay hills of Georgia. The cynics would grin and say “Sure you will,” with knowing smiles. I could look at the serious set of Carl’s face, usually split with a big ol’ country boy grin, and tell he was for real.
With his usual boyish way, Carl went on tour, racing at the Solo Trials events Dixie Region held in south Georgia, Solo I events at Talladega, Sebring, Roebling Road in Savannah, and eventually he got his Solo I license. After every step of the process, he just couldn’t wait to tell all of us every detail of his big adventure, describing his spin at Roebling, the hairpin at Sebring, the speeds he could reach on the straight sections, the friends he made. It sounded for all the world like a kid describing his trip to the baseball game.
Last week, the big moment finally came. Carl was going to the Solo I at Road Atlanta. At the last minute, I got to go along, as a corner worker. The ride North was an event (Did I mention Carl had removed the air conditioning? It’s July. Think about it.) All the way there, Carl talked about preparing the RX-7 for the weekend. He’d had just put in a new clutch. Carl had gotten a puck-type racing clutch, and stuck it in, with the help of his brother, on Wednesday evening. The shocks were adjusted according to the standard wisdom, and Carl wondered out loud if it would be right for his RX-7. He pondered if it was wise to compete in Solo I without a tow vehicle and a trailer. (We were riding in the race car. If it broke, we rode home in the back of JK’s pickup.) By Carl standards, he was a ball of nerves.
Saturday, I had to work at Turn 1, and got to watch the show up close and personal. Carl lined up, and took off when the flagman gave him the sign. He blew past Turn 1, clipping the apex and easing to the outside as he went up the hill and out of sight. He looked smoother and faster as the day went on. At dinner, Carl was all business, talking about the downshift he missed that ruined a good run, corners where he should have gone deeper and braked later. It was like an interview with any of the drivers in our group around the table. He said if he did everything just right, he ought to get his time down to two minutes. That was the big target he would shoot for tomorrow.
Sunday, I had front row seats in Turn 3. Again, Carl came swooshing by (The RX-7 still has mufflers, which Carl is planning to do away with.) cutting close to the curb in 3, and shifting up to zip out of sight after clipping Turn 4. The RX-7 came closer to the curb every lap, and picked up momentum as the afternoon wore on. Several times, I hand timed him near the magic two minutes he was after.
When the day was over, we broke camp, packed our gear in the small trailer Carl had borrowed. Carl’s best time was two minutes and a few hundredths, close, but not quite. Carl was happy, but quieter than normal, talking about how he couldn’t go all out knowing he needed to drive home in the Mazda.
Then, as we pulled away from the gate, Carl’s big grin returned, he held up one big hand for a high five, and hollered, “I raced at Road Atlanta!” Congratulations Carl, you are a Racer.
