I have been working on the ole car and I keep pushing back my hopefull first event... Well, it looks like I very well may be up for it this weekend. However, it looks like the national tour is this weekend at SGMP... I assume that means this wouldn't be an event for a first timer?
Thanks Shane

Nationals would not be a good first event. There's a bazillion people, no novice program, it's way more expensive, and you get 6-8 runs over 2 days.
It would be a really good event to go watch. As said by JD, "It's a great car show where people actually drive the cars."

I love it when Chris quotes wise philosophers...
As much as I hate to say it, this wouldn't be a good choice for a "first event" for all the reasons Chris just mentioned. The cost alone is reason enough.
Hang in there, wait til next month and we'll do our best to see that you enjoy your Sunday afternoon! You'll get more track time, more "tutoring" (if you don't mind me calling it that), and everybody will generally have more time to chat. I'd say wait till then.
See ya soon! JDK

I saw it on TV so I'm pretty sure I can do it.

It would be an awesome thing to watch and possibly help out with though. Entrants only get three runs a day and each day is a different course. Usually most of the first course but in the opposite direction. Friday is a school and test-n-tune. There's plenty to see.

OK, thanks guys.
One more thing while I have you all's attention... I've looked over the rules and it looks like I'm going to be running in SM. The only thing is that my car has no heater, I removed it to place my fuseblock behind the dash. I know this shouldn't affect me in the short term, as far as just getting started, but if I wanted to be competitive, I assume I would need to install the factory heater. Does it need to be functional or would I just need to bolt it in?

I love it when Chris quotes wise philosophers... "Now he's a philosophizer." And a Connie-Sewer of fine wine! Ippy, you're the Street Mod guy, does our buddy have to have a "working" heater or just have one? I'd guess it doesn't have to actually work, but I'd be guessing... (As opposed to philosphizin'!) Does it have to have all the hoses and ducts in place? Sandy H, you run in SM too, doncha? Any eye-deer??? JDK

In Street Modified the interpretation of rule 16.1(A) is the car must have the original factory heater installed in the car. The rule does not address the whether the heater or other "road going components" be operational.
I wouldn't sweat it too much your first time out. When you start trophying in your class, particularly at a National Tour event, then you can expect to be somewhat scrutinized by your competitors.
For now, just come out and plan on having some fun.

It's a little 240sx with a 350z engine me and my pops have been working on, mainly for the fun of the project. We just finished it up, now just need an event to get it out and run it !!

Yo, Spent! Are ya comin' out to play on April 10? Look at the "Novice Meet-up" thread that UglyMazda posted, maybe go along with the Rat Pack...
Hope to see you there!

Ha, I just so happened to check out the forums today... I'll hop over to his thread and let em know me and my pops will probably come along...
One question, the dixie site says that there are helmets avaliable... should I go ahead and get one for myself or wait to try out some of the loaners first, to get a feel of what I would like? I assume there's not going to be a local (Tallahassee) joint that sell helmets that would be suitable for SCCA?

Actually, I believe any (new) Snell rated helmet will be suitable for auto-x. Most any motorcycle shop will sell them.
According to the rule book for 2011:
Helmets meeting the following standards must be worn while on course: All helmets meeting the latest or two immediately preceding Snell Foundation standards (SA2010, SAH2010, SA2005, SA2000, M2010, M2005, M2000, K2010, K2005, K98), SFI standards 31.1, 41.1, 31.1A, 31.2A, 41.1A, 41.2A or British spec BS6658-85 type A/FR are accept- able.

Hey Spent- Like Stephen says, any current Snell-rated helmet will do for autocross. I would recommend trying it with a loaner first, ya never know... You could find you just hate autocross (which means there's something seriously wrong with YOU!) or -more likely- you might find that the helmet type you thought you'd like doesn't feel right on yer punkin.
However, I would advocate buying a nice shiny new helmet soon. It's so much easier to use yours as opposed to borrowing and returning a loaner after every run, plus you know whose Helmet Cooties are in yours...

OK, what about numbers/class labels? Tape? Don't worry about it?
