Son and I have participated in about 3-4 solo events and now want to get street legal track car instead of using every day evo driver. With so many classes, allowable modifications, etc. really dont know which way to go. I dont want to be only car in class, he wants to do or have a variety of typical bolt-ons' (18 yrs old). Decent budget so as to not have to do to much repair. Any suggestions from some of you veterans? He is looking at Nissian 240sx, 350Z, some with notable bolt-ons. Thanks for any ideas.

The 240 sounds like a good start. Relatively lightweight RWD, decent power, great aftermarket. Might be tough to find a decent one for a decent price, though. The older, cheaper S13 (late 80's, early 90's) model might be the way to go, as you might find one quicker than the later S14 model.

Harder to find one not screwed up/molested by drifters though. Does it have to be RWD?

Son drives all wheel evo now, so thought it would be educational and less expense to go RWD. He consistently goes to the 240sx as he at 18 likes the drifting also. We agreed when tires go bad could drift whats left.

He has mentioned RX7's but knowledge is at best limited for rotary engines. I want something that has many bolt-on preformance options that we can preform together.

I might be partial, but 1st gen miata's are cheap, RWD and great for auto-x. Find one from 94-97 to get the bigger motor and brakes.

I was in the same boat. I ended up with a 240. Cheap, light, and huge aftermarket... I wasn't in a rush to find one so I kept an eye out on craigslist for a ~2yr period before I found one in good condition locally for a decent price. I got my '91 with 87k miles for $1700 and it was owned by an older man and before that an old lady. Only downside it was an automatic, but I solved that problem Just a quick search on craigers... tallahassee.craigslist.org/cto/2790208828.htmlHideous color, but it's a 5spd and looks to be in good condition. Go offer 'em $2500 and you'll be in business.
